About Macau

A compact Pearl River Delta city with Chinese and Portuguese heritage and a tourism-led economy.

Queer History

Macao's own Penal Code took effect in 1996 without an offence for consensual same-sex relations, replacing the earlier Portuguese legal framework. Rainbow of Macau formed in 2013 as a public advocacy group, but the territory still provides no legal status for same-sex couples and has no comprehensive sexual-orientation discrimination law.

LGBTQ+ Culture

The dedicated LGBTQ+ venue scene is very small; social life is more often mixed or connected to nearby Hong Kong and the wider Greater Bay Area.
