About Taiwan

Taiwan blends Chinese-speaking urban culture, Indigenous traditions, Japanese-era influences and a lively democratic public sphere. Taipei is the main international gateway, while Kaohsiung, Taichung and other cities offer smaller but distinct local scenes.

Queer History

Taiwan's postwar criminal law did not criminalize consensual same-sex relations, and organized community infrastructure grew with the Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline in 1998 and the first Taiwan Pride in 2003. A constitutional ruling led parliament to enact marriage equality in 2019, the first such law in Asia.

LGBTQ+ Culture

Taiwan is one of Asia’s most visible LGBTQ+ destinations. Taipei Pride, the Ximen Red House area, clubs, bars and a substantial sauna culture make the capital especially accessible to visitors, while other cities maintain smaller communities. Taiwan became the first jurisdiction in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage in 2019; joint adoption rights were expanded in 2023, and cross-Strait same-sex marriage procedures have continued to broaden, with new official registration guidance issued in August 2026.
