About Taiwan

Taiwan blends Chinese-speaking urban culture, Indigenous traditions, Japanese-era influences and a lively democratic public sphere. Taipei is the main international gateway, while Kaohsiung, Taichung and other cities offer smaller but distinct local scenes.

Historical frame7
  1. Taiwan's history is layered rather than singular.

  2. Indigenous Austronesian peoples have histories on the island that long predate colonial states.

  3. European powers established footholds in the seventeenth century; Qing rule followed.

  4. The Qing ceded Taiwan to Japan in 1895, and Japanese colonial rule lasted until the end of the Second World War.

  5. The Republic of China government took control after 1945. The February 28 Incident of 1947, the White Terror and the long authoritarian period remain essential to understanding contemporary civic life.

  6. Martial law lasted from 1949 to 1987.

  7. Political liberalization then accelerated, and Taiwan held its first direct presidential election in 1996. Today's visible social movements—including feminist, labor, environmental, Indigenous and LGBTQ+ organizing—grew within and helped shape that democratic transition.

LGBTQ+ law and movement timeline9
  1. 1986: Activist Chi Chia-wei petitioned the legislature for same-sex marriage. The Constitutional Court's later decision documents his three-decade legal campaign.
  2. 1998: Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline was founded and is now a central counseling, family-education and community organization.
  3. 1999: Gin Gin, widely described as the first Chinese-language gay bookstore, opened in Taipei and became an important community institution.
  4. 2003: The first organized annual Taiwan Pride took place in Taipei. The official organizer identifies the 2026 march as the 24th edition, scheduled for 31 October 2026; it reports close to 150,000 participants in 2025.
  5. 2004: The Gender Equity Education Act established a legal framework for gender-diversity education and protection in schools.
  6. 24 May 2017: Constitutional Court Interpretation No. 748 held that excluding same-sex couples from a permanent intimate union violated freedom of marriage and equality.
  7. 24 May 2019: The implementation act took effect, making Taiwan the first jurisdiction in Asia to implement same-sex marriage nationwide.
  8. 2023: The amended Article 20 extended adoption rules to stepchild adoption and co-adoption by same-sex spouses.
  9. 19 September 2024: An administrative route began for certain Taiwan–mainland China same-sex couples who first marry in a third jurisdiction and then complete Taiwan's documentation and interview process. This is a conditional route, not simple blanket parity.

Local language and cultural context

同志 (tóngzhì) · 酷兒 (kù'ér) · 多元性別 (duōyuán xìngbié) · 出櫃 / 被出櫃
同志 (tóngzhì) is the most important local umbrella term. It originally means “comrade” and was reclaimed in Sinophone LGBTQ+ organizing; in ordinary use it may mean the wider LGBTQ+ community or, more narrowly, gay people.
T / P / 不分 (bùfēn) · 1號 / 0號 / 0.5 · 熊 (xióng) · 甲板 (jiǎbǎn)
Community shorthand must be handled as self-description, never classification. T / P / 不分 (bùfēn) are lesbian presentation or role labels; 1號 / 0號 / 0.5 indicate top, bottom or versatile in some gay contexts; 熊 (xióng) means bear; and 甲板 (jiǎbǎn) is the PTT gay-board nickname.
Adju
Indigenous gender cultures are plural. Adju is documented in some northern Paiwan communities, but speakers describe it in different ways.

Digital and in-person safety10
  • Use a separate email and a non-reused profile photo.

  • Do not link a family- or work-facing social account. Turn off contact upload, phone-number/ID discovery, precise distance, background location and lock-screen previews unless a feature is truly needed.

  • Do not post a hotel, room number, live venue or real-time route.

  • A public review can wait until after departure—or be omitted. Keep early conversation inside the dating app.

  • A demand to move immediately to LINE or Instagram, send money, receive a verification code, invest, or perform on video is a serious warning. Phone numbers and linked socials can reveal a legal name, employer and family graph, enabling sextortion.

  • Never pay a blackmailer;

  • preserve messages, account URLs, payment requests and timestamps. For a first meeting, choose a staffed public place, arrange independent transport, keep control of drinks, set a check-in with a trusted person and leave when consent or boundaries change.

  • Marriage equality and a large Pride do not eliminate harassment, family pressure, transphobia or rural/setting-specific risk.
