Local language and cultural context
- 同志 (tóngzhì) · 酷兒 (kù'ér) · 多元性別 (duōyuán xìngbié) · 出櫃 / 被出櫃
- 同志 (tóngzhì) is the most important local umbrella term. It originally means “comrade” and was reclaimed in Sinophone LGBTQ+ organizing; in ordinary use it may mean the wider LGBTQ+ community or, more narrowly, gay people.
- T / P / 不分 (bùfēn) · 1號 / 0號 / 0.5 · 熊 (xióng) · 甲板 (jiǎbǎn)
- Community shorthand must be handled as self-description, never classification. T / P / 不分 (bùfēn) are lesbian presentation or role labels; 1號 / 0號 / 0.5 indicate top, bottom or versatile in some gay contexts; 熊 (xióng) means bear; and 甲板 (jiǎbǎn) is the PTT gay-board nickname.
- Adju
- Indigenous gender cultures are plural. Adju is documented in some northern Paiwan communities, but speakers describe it in different ways.
