Guam

Guam is a Micronesian island in Oceania and a U.S. unincorporated territory, not an independent country.

History & timeline5

Guam is a Micronesian island in Oceania and a U.S. unincorporated territory, not an independent country.

  1. Before European colonization, CHamoru society developed in Guam and the Mariana Islands over many centuries.
  2. 1668–1898 — Spanish colonial rule began with sustained mission and colonial settlement in 1668.
  3. 1898–1941 — Guam came under U.S. rule after the Spanish-American War and was administered largely by the U.S. Navy.
  4. 1941–1944 — Imperial Japan occupied Guam during World War II; the period is remembered locally for severe hardship and wartime violence.
  5. 1950–present — The Organic Act established civilian government and U.S. citizenship for Guamanians. Guam remains a U.S. unincorporated territory; AFTERORA classifies it geographically as Oceania → Micronesia → Guam.
LGBTQ+ law, Pride & community5

Guam has local LGBTQ protections and marriage equality, while federal U.S. law is a separate legal layer.

  1. 2008 — GALA was founded in Guam as a community organization focused on LGBTQIA support, education and advocacy.
  2. 5 Jun 2015 — District of Guam litigation opened marriage to same-sex couples locally; Guam marriage law is now gender-neutral.
  3. 2015 — Guam amended its employment-discrimination law to expressly include sexual orientation and sex including gender identity or expression.
  4. 2021–2024 — Guam Legislature Pride recognitions and GALA’s Pride Carnival document an active public community layer; GALA says its annual Pride Carnival began in 2024.
  5. Current legal note — Separate Guam local law from U.S. federal law. The compiled Guam birth-record rule still uses physician/surgical-procedure language for sex-marker changes, so do not describe legal gender recognition as simple self-declaration.

CHamoru culture & local terms

Use CHamoru spelling and contextualize local queer terms; do not force one-to-one Western identity labels.

Use CHamoru as the preferred official orthographic spelling. Guåhan is a CHamoru name for Guam and appears in current community language.
Inafa’maolek and inágofli’e’ describe relational values such as mutual responsibility, harmony, care and seeing the good in others; they are cultural concepts, not LGBTQ identity labels.
Gela’ was historically derogatory for feminine/gay CHamoru men and has been reclaimed by some queer and trans CHamorus. Use it as a discovery term only with context.Caution

Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands share CHamoru heritage, but local usage and community experiences vary between islands.Caution
