Takatāpui is a Māori term with historical roots, including references to an intimate companion of the same sex in Māori tradition. In contemporary Aotearoa, some Māori use takatāpui as a culturally grounded identity that can embrace diverse genders, sexualities and sex characteristics. It is not a mechanical Māori translation of “gay” or “LGBTQ+”, and not every Māori person with a diverse sexuality or gender uses it. Meanings and preferred usage can vary by person, whānau and community. Colonisation and conservative European attitudes affected the expression and recording of Māori sexualities, so historical interpretation should privilege Māori sources and context.
Keep your surname, home or hotel room address, workplace, phone number and other identifying details off public dating profiles until you have established trust.
On proximity-based apps, hiding a displayed distance may not fully hide your approximate position because profile ordering can still reveal proximity. Disable precise location or location access when you do not need it.
Do not feel pressured to share a room address or real-time location. For a first meeting, choose a public place and tell a trusted person where you are going.
A face photo reused from public social media can be reverse-searched and linked to your real identity. Use privacy controls and treat intimate images as potentially copyable.
Requests for money, cryptocurrency, gift cards, financial help, verification codes or identity documents—especially early in a conversation—are strong scam warning signs. Be cautious if someone pushes you off-platform immediately.
If someone threatens to expose intimate material, do not keep paying or bargaining. Preserve evidence, block/report the account, and seek help from the platform, Netsafe or Police as appropriate.
In 뉴질랜드, call 111 for an emergency. Use Police 105 or online reporting for non-emergency fraud, cyber abuse or safety concerns.
Neighbourly is a real-name/address-verified neighbourhood network, not an anonymous LGBTQ+ forum. Privacy-sensitive travellers should consider that identity model before joining or posting.
