Queer History
US states long enforced sodomy laws, while groups such as the Mattachine Society in 1950 and the Stonewall uprising in 1969 helped turn scattered resistance into visible national movements. The Supreme Court invalidated remaining consensual sodomy laws in 2003 and required equal civil marriage nationwide in 2015, although rights and protections still vary by jurisdiction.
The United States has many of the world’s largest LGBTQ+ communities and nightlife districts. Same-sex marriage is recognised nationwide, while other protections vary by state.
