United States: history and milestones11

United States history begins with many distinct Indigenous nations and peoples, not European settlement. The federal republic formed through revolution and a written Constitution while slavery, dispossession and exclusion continued; emancipation, constitutional amendments, civil-rights movements and later immigration reforms reshaped the country.

LGBTQ+ law, Pride and community history12

Organized LGBTQ+ activism predates Stonewall. California is especially important to this West Coast guide through the Daughters of Bilitis in San Francisco and the first CDC AIDS report in Los Angeles. Stonewall, community-led HIV responses, court decisions, federal statutes and state protections built the current landscape, but rights still vary by jurisdiction.

  1. 1950 · Mattachine Society and early organized gay rights
  2. 1955 · Daughters of Bilitis founded in San Francisco
  3. 1969 · Stonewall uprising
    Stonewall and Greenwich Village

In the early hours of June 28, 1969, resistance followed a police raid at New York’s Stonewall Inn. Demonstrations continued over the following nights around Christopher Park and nearby streets.

Read the National Park Service’s Stonewall history page before exploring Greenwich Village.

  4. 1970 · First Christopher Street Liberation Day and early Pride marches
  5. 1981 · First CDC AIDS report, based on cases in Los Angeles
  6. 1982 onward · Community-led HIV/AIDS response expands

Culture and community3
Indigenous nations, gender and sexuality context

Two-Spirit is an Indigenous cultural and political umbrella used by some people and communities. It is not simply a synonym for Native LGBTQ+, is not universal, and should not replace a tribe or nation’s own terminology when that terminology is known.

Bookshops, cafés and community spaces

BGSQD is an independent queer bookstore and event space inside New York’s The Center. Fox Market in East Montpelier, Vermont, combines a café and groceries with books and board games.

At The Center, check the event calendar and participation details for your chosen program, as well as building hours.

Plan around the event

BGSQD hosts readings and workshops, while Godfrey’s in Richmond offers drag brunch and nightlife with DJs and shows. Brunch seating, doors opening and show start are separate times to check.

Check the event date, doors and show start in the venue’s local time, along with any holiday notices.

This is a non-ranked guide to official service routes currently relevant in the United States. Inclusion confirms a service path, not popularity, market leadership or an official venue contact.

Find the address, then check official channels

Use the full venue name, city and address to find it on Google Maps, then check its website and social accounts linked from that site. Troupe429’s FAQ directly links its Instagram. TravelGay’s city listings and Washington Blade’s D.C. guide can help with discovery.

Match the branch and the notice date; when opening times disagree, confirm them with the venue before setting out.

Digital and in-person safety7
  • Check the current state and local rules for each destination.
  • Hide precise location or distance on dating apps when you do not need it, and avoid posting your hotel or current venue in real time.
  • Meet a new contact first in a staffed public place and control your own transportation.
  • Never send money, gift cards or cryptocurrency to someone known only online; romance scams increasingly use AI-assisted messages and images.
  • Keep payments, bookings and support inside official platforms and official venue channels.
  • Call 911 for immediate police, fire or medical emergencies.
  • Alcohol purchase is 21 nationwide; venue entry ages and accepted ID rules still vary, so check the venue before going.
ID, reservations and access

Hunters in Wilton Manors is 21+ and requires an official driver’s license or passport. Troupe429 in Norwalk also requires 21+ with ID, has no coat check, and lists street-level wheelchair access and an accessible bathroom.

Bring the ID your venue accepts and check entry or bag policies before leaving. For Godfrey’s drag brunch, select a seating through its official Resy link.
