Fiji LGBTQ+ Country Guide

1. 1871 — Ratu Seru Cakobau and allies established a short-lived government and legislature in Levuka.
2. 1874 — Fiji was ceded to Great Britain and became a British colony.
3. 1879–1916 — Indian indentured labour migration (Girmit) brought nearly 60,000 people to Fiji, shaping today’s Indo-Fijian community.
4. 10 Oct 1970 — Fiji became independent.
5. 1987, 2000 and 2006 — coups/political upheavals repeatedly interrupted parliamentary democracy.
6. 2013–2014 — a new Constitution came into force in September 2013; national elections were held in September 2014 and Parliament reconvened in October.
7. 2026 — a Constitution Review Commission is consulting nationwide; the review is ongoing, so current constitutional rights remain the operative baseline.

1. 2005 — Fiji’s High Court overturned sodomy convictions and held that criminalising private consensual adult same-sex intimacy breached constitutional rights.
2. 1 Feb 2010 — the Crimes Decree formally removed colonial-era sodomy / “unnatural acts” offences for consensual adult sex.
3. 2011 — DIVA for Equality was founded in Suva by lesbians, gender-nonbinary and transmasculine activists.
4. 2013 — Constitution section 26 expressly prohibited unfair discrimination including sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.
5. 17 May 2018 — Rainbow Pride Foundation organised Fiji’s first Pride parade in Lautoka; about 50 people marched with a police escort.
6. 2023 — Chai & Chat held the first Pride Hai in Suva, creating a specifically queer Indo-Fijian Pride space.
7. 6 Jun 2026 — the fourth Pride Hai was held at Syren Nightclub in Suva, showing an active queer event network.
8. Current legal/social picture — consensual same-sex activity is legal and SOGIE discrimination is constitutionally prohibited, but same-sex marriage/civil-union recognition and legal gender recognition remain absent; social discrimination and violence risks persist.
