Country history

Copán preserves an ancient Maya city and became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980. Honduras commemorates Central American independence from Spain on 15 September 1821. On 1 July 1823, the provinces declared independence from Spain, Mexico and other powers and began forming the United Provinces of Central America.
