Finnish and Swedish are both used in public life. Check the language of local services, especially in bilingual coastal areas.

Åland is an autonomous, Swedish-speaking region. Local institutions and community infrastructure can differ from mainland Finland.

Outside the largest cities, rail and coach planning is important. Northern Finland can require long journeys between services and events.

Finnish organisations may use HLBTQ+ or HLBTIQA+ where English-language material would use LGBTQ+ or LGBTQIA+.

Swedish-language communities use words such as regnbåge, HBTQ+ and mötesplats. This matters in Åland and Swedish-speaking coastal areas.

Several current organisations and venues use “queer” directly in their names or descriptions. Read the organisation’s own wording instead of translating identity labels too aggressively.
