  1. Sri Lanka's Penal Code inherited colonial offences in 1883, and a 1995 amendment made the prohibition gender-neutral rather than repealing it.
  2. LGBTQ+ groups have pursued reform through courts, Pride and advocacy;
  3. in 2023 the Supreme Court found a private member's decriminalization bill constitutional, but the offences remain until parliament changes the law.

Sri Lanka still retains colonial-era criminal provisions used against consensual same-sex intimacy, although organised campaigns for repeal are highly visible.
