About Vietnam

Vietnam stretches from Hanoi’s northern cultural core to the fast-moving southern metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City, with major coastal travel hubs in between. That geography matters: nightlife, local attitudes and the size of visible LGBTQ+ communities vary sharply by city.

Queer History

Vietnam's modern criminal law does not make consensual same-sex relations a specific offence, while community organizations and Viet Pride, launched in 2012, increased public visibility. The state removed administrative penalties for same-sex wedding ceremonies in 2015, but it still does not legally recognize those marriages or civil partnerships.

LGBTQ+ Culture

Same-sex relations are legal and the former prohibition on same-sex weddings was removed, but same-sex marriages and registered partnerships still have no legal recognition. Ho Chi Minh City has the country’s most visible commercial gay nightlife, Hanoi has a smaller but established community, and beach cities mix dedicated venues with mainstream spaces. Viet Pride has been celebrated since 2012, while local community organisations extend well beyond the two biggest cities. Visibility has improved, but explicit nationwide protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity remain incomplete.
