Queer History
Franco-era public-danger laws targeted gay and transgender people, including through the 1970 Law on Social Danger and Rehabilitation; same-sex acts were removed from that law in 1979. Barcelona activists marched in 1977 in Spain's first major Pride protest, and democratic-era reform later brought equal marriage in 2005.
Spain is known for highly visible LGBTQ+ life in Madrid, Barcelona, Sitges, the Canary Islands and other destinations. Same-sex marriage is legal nationwide.
