About South Korea

South Korea combines centuries of peninsula history with dense, fast-moving cities, late-night food culture and one of Asia’s most connected urban societies. Seoul dominates international travel, but Busan, Daegu, Daejeon and Gwangju each have distinct local identities.

Queer History

Consensual same-sex conduct between civilians is not criminalized in South Korea, but Military Criminal Act article 92-6 continues to punish same-sex conduct between service members. The Seoul Queer Culture Festival began in 2000 and helped build public community visibility, while nationwide anti-discrimination and partnership or marriage recognition remain unresolved.

LGBTQ+ Culture

Korea’s gay scene is concentrated rather than uniform: Itaewon is the best-known international nightlife hub, Jongno has a long-running local gay-bar culture, and major regional cities support smaller bars, saunas and social networks. Same-sex marriage is still not legally recognised nationwide. A 2024 Supreme Court ruling did, however, require equal treatment of qualifying same-sex partners in the National Health Insurance dependent system, an important but limited recognition that does not create marriage equality.
