A North American country shaped by Indigenous civilisations, Spanish colonial history and strong regional identities.
Queer History
Mexico's federal criminal code did not create a specific offence for consensual same-sex relations, though morality rules and police harassment were widely used against queer people. The first major homosexual-liberation march took place in 1979, Mexico City legalized same-sex marriage in 2009, and by 2022 all states provided access to equal marriage.
Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara and other destinations have major LGBTQ+ scenes. Same-sex marriage is available nationwide.
