About Laos

A landlocked Mekong country shaped by Lao Buddhist culture, regional ethnic diversity and a socialist political system.

Queer History

Laos does not have a specific criminal prohibition on consensual same-sex relations, but it also provides little explicit national legal protection. Proud to Be Us Laos began organizing in 2012 and has built public education and community visibility, while equal marriage, partnership recognition and a comprehensive SOGIESC discrimination law remain absent.

LGBTQ+ Culture

The public LGBTQ+ scene is small and concentrated mainly in Vientiane and tourist settings, with limited dedicated nightlife.
