About Israel

Israel’s public LGBTQ+ scene varies sharply by city. Tel Aviv-Yafo has the country’s strongest fixed commercial nightlife and men’s-sauna layer, while Jerusalem, Haifa, Be’er Sheva and several regional cities rely more on Pride houses, municipal community centers and recurring events.

Queer History

Consensual same-sex conduct was decriminalized in 1988, and employment protections based on sexual orientation followed in 1992. Tel Aviv dates its first Pride event to 1993, while Jerusalem Open House was founded in 1997 and became an anchor for Pride and community organizing; religious LGBTQ groups, lesbian-feminist organizing, trans advocacy and municipal centers form other important parts of the country's queer history.

LGBTQ+ Culture

A city can have a real queer community without a permanent gay bar. AFTERORA therefore separates Tel Aviv’s verified commercial venues from community-resource city pages elsewhere. Public visibility and social risk vary by place, and the broader travel-security situation can change quickly; check current official travel advice before visiting.
