About Indonesia

Indonesia is a vast archipelago stretching between the Indian and Pacific oceans, shaped by hundreds of ethnic groups, local languages and religious traditions. Jakarta is its huge urban capital, while Bali has a distinct Hindu-majority culture and tourism economy.

Queer History

Indonesia's national criminal law historically did not ban consensual same-sex relations, and Lambda Indonesia, founded in 1982, helped seed later LGBTQ+ networks. Aceh adopted a bylaw criminalizing same-sex acts in 2014 and began enforcing it in 2015, while nationwide political hostility has repeatedly narrowed public organizing and venue safety.

LGBTQ+ Culture

Indonesia does not have one uniform gay scene. Bali—especially Seminyak, Legian and nearby parts of southern Bali—has the country’s most visible visitor-facing gay bars, men-only spas and wellness spaces. Jakarta’s scene is larger but markedly more discreet, relying on mixed venues, private networks and male massage spaces after years of venue closures. Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Medan and Batam have few verified gay-specific public venues; some cities do have substantial men-only or men-focused wellness businesses, which AFTERORA lists separately without assuming they are LGBTQ+ venues. Queer social life outside Bali is still more often routed through mainstream venues, events and private networks. Conditions vary sharply by province: Aceh enforces Sharia provisions against same-sex relations, and Indonesia’s new national criminal code took effect in 2026, increasing legal uncertainty for unmarried couples including same-sex couples. Check current local conditions before travel.
