A central European country shaped by regional states, industrialisation and post-war reunification.
Queer History
Germany's Paragraph 175 criminalized sex between men from 1871, and the Nazi regime broadened it in 1935 while persecuting thousands; the provision was not fully repealed until 1994. Magnus Hirschfeld's Scientific-Humanitarian Committee began organized reform work in 1897, and later movements helped secure equal marriage in 2017.
Germany has one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ scenes, especially in Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg, with marriage equality nationwide.
