About Brunei

Brunei is a small, oil-rich sultanate on the island of Borneo, shaped by Malay Islamic traditions, extensive welfare provision and a highly centralised monarchy. Most visitor activity is concentrated around Bandar Seri Begawan and the Brunei-Muara district.

Queer History

Brunei retains British-derived Penal Code section 377, while its Syariah Penal Code also criminalizes consensual same-sex intimacy. Full implementation of the Syariah provisions in 2019 intensified international concern, and criminalization leaves no safe space for open Pride or legally recognized same-sex partnerships.

LGBTQ+ Culture

Brunei has no currently verifiable open gay-bar or gay-club district, and public LGBTQ+ visibility is extremely low. Same-sex sexual activity is criminalised under both the civil and Syariah penal codes. Severe penalties remain written into law, although a moratorium on the death penalty is currently in place. AFTERORA therefore does not encourage travellers to hunt for hidden queer venues. The two listings shown in Bandar Seri Begawan are independently verified men-focused wellness businesses; neither is labelled gay-only without explicit evidence.
