Queer History
Brazil's Imperial Criminal Code omitted the Portuguese sodomy offence in 1830, although police and morality rules continued to repress queer life. Somos, founded in 1978, helped launch a modern national movement; the Supreme Federal Court recognized same-sex unions in 2011, nationwide marriage registration followed in 2013, and the court brought homophobic and transphobic violence under anti-racism law in 2019.
São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and other cities have enormous LGBTQ+ scenes and Pride events. Same-sex marriage is recognised nationwide.
