- 衆道 (shudō)
- Historical term associated with male–male erotic and ethical/social practices, often structured by age/status. Do not map it directly onto modern gay identity.
- Xジェンダー (X-jendā)
- A Japan-developed self-identification category used by some people whose gender is not simply male or female. It spread through minority communities and the internet from the late 1990s; not every non-binary person uses it.
- SOGI/ソジ (SOGI / soji)
- Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. A policy/rights concept that applies to everyone, not a label for minorities only.
- ゲイ (gei)
- Current neutral loanword for gay, commonly used as self-identification when chosen by the person concerned.
- レズビアン (rezubian)
- Current neutral loanword for lesbian. Prefer this full form over the shortened レズ when writing neutral guide copy.
- クィア (kuia)
- Loanword for queer. It may be a positive self-identity for some people, but because histories and preferences differ, do not apply it to someone who has not chosen it.
- ホモ/オカマ/レズ (homo / okama / rezu)
- Context-sensitive expressions that can be insulting or harassing. Do not use them as default labels or discovery tags; retain only when explaining historical/media language, harassment or a person’s own quoted self-description.
- セクマイ (sekumai)
- Abbreviation of セクシュアルマイノリティ; understood in community language, but neutral guide copy should prefer a specific self-chosen identity when known.
- ビアン (bian)
- Informal abbreviation of レズビアン. It appears in community/service language; neutral editorial copy should normally prefer the full form.
- ノンケ (nonke)
- Scene slang for a heterosexual person, especially in gay-community contexts. Not a formal identity label or sole evidence of an LGBTQ+ venue.
- ママ/マスター (mama / masutā)
- In some small bars, role terms for the person who runs or hosts the venue. Usage varies; ‘mama’ is not a gender-identity label.
- 店子 (miseko)
- In some gay-bar scenes, 店子 is read miseko and means staff. Do not confuse this scene reading with tanako in unrelated contexts.
- ハッテン場 (hattenba)
- A term for places used for sexual encounters, especially between men. Adult/high-privacy keyword; not a general synonym for gay bar, sauna or LGBTQ+ venue.
