About Bangladesh

A densely populated Bengal delta nation shaped by Bengali language, river life, Dhaka’s megacity energy and the legacy of the 1971 independence war. For queer travellers, the country is better understood through discreet community networks and men-focused wellness spaces than through a visible commercial gay district.

Queer History

Section 377, imposed under British colonial rule in 1860, still criminalizes consensual same-sex intimacy in Bangladesh. Community initiatives such as the Roopbaan magazine emerged publicly in 2014, but the murders of LGBTQ+ activists in 2016 and continuing criminalization forced much organizing back into guarded or private spaces.

LGBTQ+ Culture

Public LGBTQ+ nightlife is extremely limited. Section 377 still criminalises male same-sex sexual activity, and conservative social attitudes keep much of queer life private. Dhaka nevertheless has long-running community and health organisations such as Bandhu Social Welfare Society. AFTERORA separates those community resources and men-only grooming or massage businesses from verified gay venues rather than treating 'men only' as proof of an LGBTQ+ venue.
